Denitrifying bacteria refer to the general term for bacteria that can reduce nitrates (NO₃⁻) or nitrites (NO₂⁻) to gaseous nitrogen (such as nitrogen gas N₂). They carry out denitrification under anoxic or anaerobic conditions, thereby changing the form of nitrogen's existence in the environment.

Under xenon conditions, they utilize the oxygen in nitric acid to oxidize organic matter and obtain the energy required for their own life activities. Denitrifying bacteria are widely distributed in soil, manure, and sewage. They can convert nitrate nitrogen into nitrogen gas instead of ammonia nitrogen, which is not completely the opposite of the function of nitrifying bacteria. They are mainly applied in sewage treatment, such as landscape water treatment, urban inland river treatment, and aquaculture wastewater treatment, among which the application in aquaculture wastewater treatment is the most widespread.
